The popular 5K handicap series returns to Maldon Promenade Park in 2018. A series of 5K handicapped races for all abilities. The handicap system means that the slowest person starts first. Each entrant estimates their finish time and gets a handicap based on that time. This should ensure that everyone finishes very close together.
How the handicap works
The idea of the handicap is to give runners of different abilities the chance to compete equally. First you need to work out how fast you will complete the course.
The handicap is based on 40 minutes, so if you think that it will take you 30 minutes to complete your run you will be given a 10-minute handicap and start at 7.40pm. If you expect to do a 20-minute 5K you will have a 20-minute handicap and start at 7.50pm and so on. The idea is that everyone finishes close together.
After each race the handicaps are adjusted as you get quicker. By the end of the series, many will have improved their PB.
The Junior Mile is organised in the same way. The children estimate how long it may take them to complete the run. They will have a staggered start based on these times.
Whether you are a regular racer or a complete beginner you all have the same chance of winning with this format. Entries are only £2.50 per senior race or £1.00 for the Junior run. £10 entry in advance for the whole senior series. Please see the entry details on the form below.
There are ample Parking and Toilet facilities in the park. Find us on Park Drive, Maldon, CM9 5JQ.
These have proved to be really fun evenings for all the family, see you there.
