Welcome to Tiptree Road Runners, a small friendly club taking part in road, cross-country and trail races throughout the year. We hope you find everything you’re looking for, please contact us if you have any questions.
Interested in giving us a try?
We’re always happy to meet potential new members and you’d be very welcome at one of our training sessions.
The main club night takes place every TUESDAY evening at 7.30pm, at Tiptree Leisure World Sports Centre, Thurstable School, CO5 0EL. Go through reception and take a right, our room is the first one on the right. Runners generally arrive from 7.15 onwards to socialise, order/collect kit etc., before the Chairman opens the session with announcements and race results. Sessions vary from one week to the next and are tailored for each group – see our Coaches page for more details of the groups. This is the one to come to if you’re a first-timer, we’re finished by 9pm.
Members also meet up on Thursday evenings, 7.00pm, meeting out the front of the Sports Centre. There are no formal announcements, etc., for this session. These sessions are structured so that runners of any ability may all take part together; it’s a chance to get to know runners from different groups and support one another in achieving our goals.
If you are taking part in club training in autumn or winter when nights are dark, you must wear a hi-viz and reflective top and a head torch. We often run outside the village on unlit country roads so it’s vital that you can see where you’re going and that other road users can see you. There are a few spares available for anyone who has forgotten or not yet bought their own, but use of these is limited. During the lighter evenings of summer please wear a hi-viz or brightly coloured top.
Club members can compete in races as often or as little as suits them. For those who do, we regularly compete in road races from 5k up to marathon, or even further, all year round. In the autumn and winter, we compete in the 53-12 cross-country league and Essex championship races. Many of our members also take part in trail runs, which are unmarked and unmarshalled races where you are given a written set of instructions to follow which take you round the course. These are great fun and often start and finish at a pub. A list of fixtures is on our events page and upcoming races are announced in advance at training and in our quarterly newsletter.
Taking part in races is a great opportunity to get to know your TRR club colleagues better and you will always gain a huge amount of support from other runners when you take part.
Tiptree Road Runners races
Every year, we host the Tiptree 10, one of the most popular ten-mile events in the region. In your first year of membership you have the option to enter the event, and after that we ask all Club members to volunteer to help by doing one of a number of jobs that need to be done in order to make the event go smoothly. This could be marshalling on the course, directing traffic, handing out goody bags, staffing the tea stall, etc.
We also host a 5k Handicap Series during the summer on certain Thursday evenings in Promenade Park, Maldon. This series of five races is structured so that runners set off at different times according to their expected 5k race time. Slower runners set off first and faster ones later, the idea being that everyone should finish at around the same time. Participants work hard to try and catch those who started before them and stay ahead of those starting later, which often produces great performances and participants regularly see their times improve during the series. Members can sign up to run one or more of the series or volunteer to help out with marshalling etc.
