Race Day FAQs

When should I arrive and where do I collect my number?

If it’s your first race of the series, please arrive from 6:30pm to collect your race number from the registration desk. Registration will close at 7:15pm. Race HQ is located at the pavilion opposite Pirate’s Bay Adventure Golf.

Please complete the medical and emergency contact details on the reverse of your number before racing. Safety pins will be provided. You’ll keep the same number for all five races, so remember to bring it with you each week.

When does the race start?

Runners start setting off from 7:30pm, in handicap order. Please arrive in plenty of time to warm up and make your way to the start area before marshalling begins at around 7:20pm.

Do I need to run all five races?

No. You can run as many or as few races as you like. To appear in the final league standings, you’ll need to complete at least four races.

Can I enter just one race?

Entry covers the full five-race series and includes one registration and one race number to use throughout. You’re welcome to take part in as many or as few races as you choose. No refunds are given for races not run.

How does the handicap system work?

Runners start at different times based on their predicted 5K finish time. Slower runners set off first, with faster runners starting later, aiming for everyone to finish at a similar time. Handicaps are reviewed during the series to keep competition fair. More information about the handicap system can be found here.

What happens if I run much faster or slower than my predicted time?

That’s absolutely fine. If you significantly outperform your predicted time, your handicap will be adjusted for future races.

Can I change my handicap time after registering?

Yes. You can request a change to your predicted 5K time up to 24 hours before the first race. Changes cannot be made on race day. Please contact the Race Director using our contact page (select Race Director – Maldon 5k from the drop-down list).

Where can I find race results and league standings?

Full results and updated league tables are published on our website no later than 24 hours after each race. Click here for results.

Is there parking available?

There is plenty of parking available in and around Promenade Park. Parking charges are £1.70 for up to 1 hour, £3.40 for up to 2 hours, and £8.00 for all-day parking.

Ticket machines accept card payments only, or payment via the RingGo app (additional charges may apply when using the app). Promenade Park is managed by Maldon District Council. For the latest parking information, prices, and updates, please visit the Visit Maldon website.

Please park considerately and avoid blocking driveways, pavements, or access routes on neighbouring residential streets. We want to maintain a positive relationship with local residents and businesses, so where possible please use the Maldon Promenade car park.

Are toilets and facilities available?

Yes. Promenade Park has free public toilets, including disabled facilities and a Changing Places toilet (RADAR key required). Please note that the public toilets close at 7:30pm.

Will drinks be provided?

Water will be available at the finish in biodegradable paper cups. In the interests of sustainability, and particularly for races in warmer weather, we encourage runners to bring their own drinks where possible.

Is the course suitable for wheelchair or buggy runners?

No. Due to the nature of the handicap start and the aim of runners finishing together, wheelchairs and buggies are not permitted for safety reasons.

Can I wear headphones?

Our race is run according to England Athletics rules of competition. This means that headphones that work by conducting sound through bones (e.g. Shokz) and do not sit in the ears are acceptable. All other earbuds or headphones are not allowed. If seen wearing headphones that are not allowed, you will be asked by a marshal to remove them. Any runner refusing to take them off will be disqualified.

What is the minimum age to enter?

You must be at least 16 years old on race day to take part. Runners under the age of 18 will be required to complete a parental consent form.

Where can I find updates about the series?

Updates, news, and photos are shared via the Maldon 5K Handicap Series Facebook page and the TRR website.

Who can I contact with questions?

Please contact the Race Director using our contact page (select Race Director – Maldon 5k from the drop-down list).
