Quick Questions
How did you get into running?
I ran a few parkruns at Great Lines, Kent in 2018, but wasn’t very fit. Covid and a period of poor mental health delayed things, and it wasn’t until my 40th birthday that I made a focused effort to start running properly. Things really started when I moved back to Essex and showed up at Great Notley parkrun on 28 August 2021. The rest, they say, is history…
What are you most proud of in your running?
I’m most proud of what I’ve done for the running community, rather than my own running. I’ve been Run Director at Great Notley parkrun on 39 occasions and have volunteered there almost 250 times. I’ve also been Race Director for the Tiptree 10 and the Maldon 5k Handicap Series. Helping others achieve their goals means far more to me than achieving my own.
When did you join TRR?
April 2022.
Favourite training session?
I enjoy leading sessions that are time-based, as they allow runners of all abilities to take part together. My personal favourite recently has been the Gear Changer session – mainly because it gives me the chance to sprint like a child during the effort sections!
Most memorable run or performance?
My first Grizzly in 2023 – mud, hills, and more mud. It was unlike anything I had done before, and the atmosphere in Seaton was just incredible.
Favourite race distance?
10km
Racing or social running?
Social every time. The running is only part of it – preferably followed by a black filter coffee and a good chat with mates.
Who inspires you at the club?
There are two people…
Michelle, for her resilience and determination in the face of a serious injury in 2023, and for continuing to show real strength and positivity throughout.
Len, for opening my eyes to the joy of volunteering, for teaching me what it takes to build a welcoming and inclusive community at Great Notley parkrun, and for giving me the opportunity to be a Run Director – a role I’m incredibly grateful for and still enjoy immensely.
Favourite local place to run?
The Halstead marathon route is a favourite – lots of options for short or long runs along the country lanes. I also like running near water; there’s something relaxing about it.
